For centuries northern Scandinavia has been inhabited by the native sami population and their reindeers. Set in 1852, modernization is about to enter the desolate village of Kautokeino where authority is held by the ruthless and prosperous liquor dealer Ruth. One of the native tribes, led by a young woman named Elen, refuses to pay their unjust debt to Ruth, leading to one of the most dramatic episodes in northern Scandinavian history.

Year: 2005
2005 | directed by Deepa Mehta | Hindi | 117 minutes | color
Following her husband’s death, willful seven–year–old Chuyia is abandoned, kicking and screaming, at a widows’ ashram—and immediately silenced by the commanding madame of this impoverished ‘prison’ of untouchables. These widows are serving a virtual life sentence for innocent crimes against Hinduism’s harshest dictates. Yet naturally cheerful Chuyia is sustained by a precious, if delusional, belief in imminent rescue. Political tensions forced Deepa Mehta to make the film in Sri Lanka, rather than in India.
